The Faculty of Architecture successfully organized Sharon Connect – A One Day Hands-on Workshop on Contemporary Installations as a collaborative initiative between the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) program and Sharon Plywood Company. The workshop provided students with an enriching platform to explore contemporary interior design practices through practical learning, teamwork, and real-time fabrication experience.

The institution extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Honourable President, Er. A.C.S. Arunkumar, for continuously encouraging hands-on practical exposure beyond conventional classroom learning. His support towards experiential education continues to inspire students to develop industry-ready skills and creative confidence.

Bridging Design and Practical Learning

As part of the ongoing collaboration initiated last semester between the Bachelor of Design program and Sharon Plywood Company, the workshop concluded with an engaging and highly interactive training session focused on contemporary interior installations.

The workshop encouraged students to move beyond theoretical design approaches and actively participate in the complete process of design development, fabrication, and execution. Students from the first and third year B.Des programs worked collaboratively to conceptualize and create contemporary bookshelves and wall units inspired by parametric design concepts.

The projects reflected creativity, technical understanding, and innovative thinking while introducing students to practical problem-solving methods used in the interior and furniture design industry.

Hands-on Experience in Contemporary Installations

One of the most remarkable aspects of the workshop was the hands-on learning experience provided to the students. Participants designed and fabricated three contemporary bookshelves in modular formats, exploring the principles of parametric design, spatial composition, and functional aesthetics.

The workshop materials were facilitated by Sharon Plywood Company, enabling students to work directly with professional-grade materials and fabrication processes.

Students actively engaged in:

  • Concept development and design ideation
  • 2D technical drawings and detailing
  • Material estimation and planning
  • Model fabrication and execution
  • Understanding contemporary installation techniques
  • Exploring parametric design applications

The immersive nature of the workshop allowed students to gain practical exposure to every stage of the design and execution process.

Industry Interaction with Chisel Works, Chennai

The workshop was further enriched through the participation of the architect team from Chisel Works. The professionals guided students throughout the session by providing technical insights into 2D drafting, estimation methods, material handling, and execution strategies.

Their mentorship offered students valuable industry exposure and helped bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice.

An especially inspiring moment during the workshop was witnessing students confidently operate cutting machines and independently develop the installation models under expert guidance. The active involvement and enthusiasm displayed by the students highlighted their eagerness to learn and adapt to practical design challenges.

A Proud Moment of Recognition

A proud moment of the event was the certificate distribution ceremony, where certificates were presented by the Honourable President, Er. A.C.S. Arunkumar, to the B.Des students of the Faculty of Architecture who participated in Sharon Connect.

Conducted in collaboration with Sharon Plywood and guided by experts from Chisel Works, the workshop provided students with valuable industry exposure, practical learning opportunities, and real-time execution experience. The recognition served as a motivation for students to continue exploring innovation, craftsmanship, and experiential learning in the field of design.

Completing Three Bookshelves in a Single Day

The energy and dedication demonstrated throughout the workshop were truly commendable. Despite the intensive nature of the session, students successfully completed three contemporary bookshelf installations within a single day.

The achievement reflected not only their technical capabilities but also their teamwork, time management, creativity, and commitment toward experiential learning.

Certificate Distribution and Formal Gathering

The workshop concluded with a formal gathering organized by Sharon Ply, where certificates were distributed to the participating first and third year B.Des students in recognition of their successful participation and contribution.

The event was facilitated by the Head and Executive Team members of the Faculty, who appreciated the collaborative efforts and encouraged students to continue exploring innovative design practices.

As a token of gratitude and appreciation, the Heads of the Department also honoured the resource team and collaborators with mementos for their valuable support and contribution toward the successful execution of the workshop.

Encouraging Future-Ready Designers

Workshops like Sharon Connect play an important role in nurturing future designers by integrating academic learning with practical industry exposure. Through collaborative initiatives, students gain confidence, technical expertise, and a deeper understanding of contemporary design and fabrication practices.

The workshop successfully created an engaging platform for creativity, experimentation, and experiential learning, empowering students to explore innovative approaches in interior and installation design.
