As part of the Orientation Programme 2026, the 1st Year B.Arch and B.Design students of the Faculty of Architecture, Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute, visited Gandhi Mandapam for an insightful architectural site study.

The visit provided students with an opportunity to step beyond the classroom and engage directly with a significant built environment. Through careful observation and freehand sketching, students explored the monument’s architectural features, spatial character, proportions, details, and its relationship with the surrounding environment.

The site study encouraged students to develop a deeper understanding of how architecture interacts with its context. By observing the monument firsthand, they were able to appreciate the influence of form, scale, space, and surroundings in shaping the experience of a place.

Freehand sketching played an important role throughout the visit, allowing students to capture architectural elements and spatial experiences in their own visual language. The exercise strengthened their observation skills while encouraging them to interpret architecture creatively and thoughtfully.

The visit was an enriching learning experience for the budding designers and architects, inspiring them to look at buildings and spaces with greater curiosity and attention to detail.

Every sketch tells a story, every observation builds understanding, and every site visit shapes the vision of a future architect.
