The Faculty of Architecture recently organized an insightful site visit and case study for first-year B.Arch and B.Des students at a residential flat in Porur. This academic initiative was designed to provide students with hands-on exposure to real-world design and planning, extending learning beyond the classroom environment.

Learning Through Real Spaces

The visit offered students a unique opportunity to observe how theoretical concepts are translated into practical applications. By exploring an actual residential setting, they gained a deeper understanding of spatial planning and how different elements come together to create functional and aesthetic living spaces.

Observing Design Elements in Detail

During the visit, students carefully studied and documented key aspects of interior and architectural design, including:

  • Spatial planning and layout efficiency
  • Selection and use of materials
  • Finishes and surface treatments
  • Lighting design and natural light integration
  • Building services and utilities

This detailed observation helped them connect classroom concepts with on-site execution.

Understanding Aesthetic Principles

The experience enabled students to see the real-life application of design principles such as colour, texture, and composition. Observing these elements in a lived-in environment enhanced their ability to critically analyze design choices and their impact on user experience.

Exposure to Modern Design Solutions

In addition to foundational design aspects, students also gained valuable insights into:

  • Furniture design and space optimization
  • Home automation systems
  • Material selection for different surfaces and functions

These learnings introduced them to contemporary trends and technologies shaping modern residential design.

A Step Towards Professional Readiness

Such site visits play a crucial role in architectural education by bridging the gap between theory and practice. This hands-on learning experience not only strengthened student’s understanding of design concepts but also prepared them for future professional challenges.

The Faculty of Architecture continues to emphasize experiential learning, ensuring that students develop both creative and practical skills essential for success in the design industry.
