The Faculty of Architecture organized an enriching educational trip for the first- and second-year M.Arch (Interior Architecture) students. Guided by our faculty coordinators Dr. Kumudhavalli and Ar. Harinya Meenu, the visit combined hands-on furniture learning with cultural and architectural exploration.
The day began at Wood & Design, Auroville, where students engaged with designer Vincent Roy, a French furniture expert known for his sustainable design philosophies and handcrafted woodworking techniques. Through a detailed workshop and live demonstrations, students learned about:
- Sustainable woodworking practices
- Traditional joinery and construction methods
- Ergonomic detailing in interior furniture
- Precision, material behaviour, and craftsmanship quality
- Balancing aesthetics with functional interior needs
This hands-on exposure helped students understand the complexities of handcrafted furniture and its relevance in contemporary interior architecture. The experience strongly supports their studio projects, research work, and evolving design sensitivity.
The second half of the trip featured a Heritage Walk in Pondicherry, led by Ashok Panda, Co-Convener of INTACH Pondicherry. Students explored the historic urban fabric, colonial architecture, and conservation practices of the city. The walk offered valuable insights into:
- Heritage precincts and traditional street patterns
- Conservation techniques and adaptive reuse
- The cultural identity of Pondicherry’s built environment
- The relevance of context-sensitive interior design
This experience deepened student’s understanding of how heritage, culture, and design coexist, enhancing their approach to interior architectural solutions.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our Honourable President A.C.S. Arunkumar Sir for his continuous support and encouragement towards FOA initiatives. The trip successfully broadened student’s design perspectives, making it a memorable and meaningful part of their academic journey.
