Architecture education extends beyond classrooms and design studios. For aspiring architects, understanding how ideas are translated into real structures is an essential part of professional learning. Providing this valuable exposure, the III Year B.Arch students of the Faculty of Architecture, Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute, visited DAC NAPPAVALLEY Apartments, OMR, Navalur, as part of their Architectural Design IV course.
The site visit provided students with an opportunity to observe the practical aspects of residential architecture and understand how design concepts are implemented at a live construction site. Moving beyond drawings and theoretical discussions, students gained firsthand insights into the various stages and considerations involved in developing an apartment project.
During the visit, students explored key aspects of apartment planning, site zoning, structural systems, residential layouts, and building services. They were also introduced to the importance of integrating functional requirements with architectural design while planning residential developments.
The visit further highlighted the role of sustainable design strategies and landscape planning in creating comfortable and environmentally responsive residential environments. Students observed how different design decisions contribute to the overall performance, usability, and visual character of a project.
Another important learning aspect was understanding quality assurance and construction safety measures. Observing these practices at the site helped students appreciate the importance of maintaining construction standards, coordinating different project components, and ensuring a safe working environment.
The site visit was guided by faculty members Ar. Vilasini and L.Ar. Mohammed Waseem Akram, who provided valuable academic insights and professional guidance throughout the visit. Their support helped students connect their classroom learning with the practical realities of architectural practice.
