Venturing beyond textbooks and lectures, the Faculty of Architecture at Dr. M.G.R. University organized an Urban Design Studio educational trip to Kochi as part of the B.Arch 9th Semester curriculum. This immersive journey gave our students an invaluable opportunity to explore culture, creativity, and practical design thinking in one of India’s most vibrant port cities.

Guided by Prof. Dr. Mookambika, the trip was enriched with insights into Kochi’s rich heritage, art, and architecture. Students delved into the city’s evolving urban fabric, understanding how history and modernity coexist in its streets, waterfronts, and public spaces.

The Urban Design Study – Kochi 2025 offered our 5th-year students a chance to:

  • Engage with the city’s culture and heritage.
  • Study its urban growth patterns and challenges.
  • Interact with locals and office bearers for practical perspectives.
  • Envision sustainable solutions to the challenges of modern cities.

A highlight of the trip was the Kathakali experience, where students witnessed Kerala’s world-renowned classical dance-drama. The mesmerizing performance—blending expressive storytelling, elaborate costumes, and powerful facial expressions—gave students a deep appreciation of how traditional art forms are woven into the cultural fabric of Kochi.

This educational journey was not only about urban design but also about connecting with people, traditions, and ideas that shape cities. It was an eye-opening experience that encouraged our students to look beyond conventional design approaches and imagine inclusive, sustainable, and culturally rooted urban solutions for the future.
